From “Reading Crisis” to Real Results: Meet Speech Pathologist, Michael

Greetings! I’m Michael and I have been a speech pathologist for the last five years. Before I came to speech pathology, I was a teacher. And as a teacher, it was my very great privilege to share my love of knowledge and learning with my students, but I was also disheartened by my first-hand experience with the ‘reading crisis,’ and how it meant that so many students were, for no good reason, locked out of the world of books and literature—a world that had enriched my life beyond counting. I wanted to find out what the most effective ways were of helping those students who the in-vogue approaches to literacy instruction had failed, and that lead me to speech pathology.

Outside of work, there are the aforementioned books that keep me occupied. When my attention-seeking and deeply-needy cats, Dusk and Mellow, allow it I enjoy reading about wide-ranging subjects, from ancient philosophy to the latest developments in technology and everything in between. I also enjoy studying languages (of both the human and computer varieties) and am currently trying to get my head around both modern-day and Koine Greek! I’m also a big gamer, but my clients are often disappointed to discover I don’t know anything about Minecraft or Roblox!
